The recent run of Go Daddy commercials, as well as a series of emails exchanges I’ve had with clients asking about domain prices makes me think it’s time for a refresher.
Let me begin by saying there is NO REASON ON EARTH TO PAY $15 for a domain. Yes, I’m talking to someone in particular.
Domain names cost on average $8, and there are an endless number of domain sellers willing to give you the first year for $2 or less, and $8 a year after that.
There are no secrets or no tricks to know about domains.
Over the years I’ve bought domains from a whole range of sellers, some of them shifty, some of the never to be seen again but the deal always went through.
The folks in the business of selling are nothing more than resellers. A regulatory agency actually controls the names, but not the prices.
So the simple solution to getting a good deal and reliable support, stick with the big guys, the names we all know.

1Is “Master of My Domain Part 2″ going to cover how easy it is to renew names? I don’t even want to tell you what I’m paying Register.com for that…
